Lenten Reading for March 20

The story continues.

Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. (John 12:3 – 4)

Sometimes the holy spirit whispers to us, calling us to do something that, on a rational level may not seem to make much sense. Mary pours costly perfume on Jesus feet, probably unaware of exactly why this was the right thing to do, distressing others around her who are not tuned into what the Holy Spirit is doing in the moment. But this is not ordinary time. Jesus is getting ready to die, and Mary is tuned into what Jesus needs in a way that others are not.

Do we give opportunity for the Holy Spirit to lead us? Do we ponder our nighttime dreams; do we make time to sit in silence, quieting our mind, waiting to be surprised by what God might say? Do we attend to the message of the unexpected fragrance?
